Tan y Foel Quarry

Development

Tan y Foel Quarry is a long-established, family run, gritstone aggregate quarry located in Powys in mid-Wales. The quarry supplies a range of aggregates to the local construction market and also high specification aggregates for road surfacing over much of England and Wales.

Challenges:

  • Reserves of the high specification aggregates were running low and tipping space for quarry waste stone was becoming exhausted;
  • The Site was located in sensitive landscape with visual and cultural heritage constraints.

Quarryplan Involvement:

  • Design of major quarry and tip extension scheme;
  • Project managing a detailed and highly technical EIA for the proposed development;
  • Diverting a bridleway running through the quarry extension area.

Outcome:

  • Secured planning permission for the development without objections from statutory consultees or from any local residents and with permission granted under delegated powers;
  • Permission delivers 15 million tonnes of gritstone with an end date for quarrying of 2063;
  • Successfully diverted existing bridleway without any objections.
