The development proposal included the continued use of the clay pit and a westerly extension over an area of c. 4ha with restoration to biodiverse habitat to include a water body.
Challenges:
- Supply of material to only operational brickworks in Ireland;
- Proximity of public supply borehole;
- Historic flooded gypsum mine workings under the eastern extraction slope;
- Discharge of water in to the River Lagan and connection with European Sites
- Third party appeal.
Quarryplan Involvement:
- Pre- Application Discussions
- Hydrological and hydrogeological assessment and modelling;
- Geotechnical assessment;
- Submissions to An Bord Pleanála.
Outcome:
In addition to a recommendation to grant Approval by the Planning Authority, planning permission was subsequently granted by An Bord Pleanála and the continuation of supply of material to the only operational brickworks in Ireland has been secured for a further 20 years.
