Tarmac operates a substantial limestone quarry at Stancombe near Bristol which is the largest quarry in the North Somerset Council area. Tarmac also has a major landholding with long-term potential although these areas are not allocated in the Local Development Plan(LDP). The proposal was to secure an allocation in the new LDP to maintain the long-term future of the quarry.
Challenge:
- North Somerset Council’s LDP had not identified any new mineral extraction areas;
- The quarry would be exhausted by the end of the new LDP;
- It was particularly important to secure an allocation in the new LDP to maintain the long-term future of the quarry.
Quarryplan involvement:
- Discussions and negotiations with North Somerset planners
- Preparation of a quarry development scheme;
- Environmental assessments to demonstrate mitigation of impact from the quarry development.
Outcome:
The new LDP has included the quarry extension as a Preferred Area for the extraction of 40 million tonnes of limestone
